Terms of Service
These terms apply to the Recoop beta service: the website, the app, your private forwarding address, the emails we send, and the Recoop Collector extension for Chrome (together, the "service"). They are an agreement between you and the individual who operates Recoop (the "operator", "we", "us"). A legal entity will be named here before public launch.
The beta is invite-only: you may apply on our website, and the operator decides who receives an invitation. It is offered only in the United States, and only to people 18 or older. It is free during the beta — see "Fees" below. Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect and why; it is part of these terms. If you do not agree with these terms, please do not use the service.
The service
Recoop helps you get Costco's price adjustment when something you bought online drops in price within Costco's adjustment window. Here is what it does:
- Learns what you bought from the Costco.com order emails you forward to your private Recoop address.
- Watches prices through the Recoop Collector extension, which checks current Costco.com prices from users' browsers and pools the results.
- Applies the rules. We compare what you paid with the current price and apply Costco's published conditions — 30 days from purchase, the item still in stock, an active promotion, the same sales channel — plus two rules of our own: we do not alert you for drops under $2 per item, and we alert once per purchase.
- Emails you at most once a day, with the items, the amounts and one link to Costco's price-adjustment page.
- Notices the refund when Costco's refund email is forwarded to us, and tells you.
What Recoop does not do today:
- It does not read your Costco account, order history or receipts. Purchases come only from forwarded emails.
- It does not file anything. You do.
- It does not see warehouse (in-store) purchases, because Costco sends no email for them.
- It does not work without Gmail forwarding.
- It does not charge anything.
Your account and the beta. Your account is your email address. Sign-in links are single-use and expire in minutes; anyone who can read your email can sign in as you, so protect that mailbox. The "Manage email preferences" link in our emails works without signing in: anyone holding it can pause your email, request deletion or send us feedback in your name, but cannot read your data — do not forward our emails to people you do not trust. The beta is invite-only. One account per person; sign up only with an address you control. Apply only with your own address; applying with someone else's address is misuse of the service. We may limit, pause or end the beta, or any feature, at any time.
The extension. We grant you a personal, revocable license to install and use the Recoop Collector in Chrome, under these terms and the Chrome Web Store terms. It makes a small number of automated price checks on costco.com from your browser — about every six hours, at most 50 items, seconds apart. The Privacy Policy says exactly what it reads and sends. If it hits an error, it sends us a crash report, as the Privacy Policy describes. It works only while you are signed in to Recoop in that browser, and it reports under your account. Do not modify it to check faster or more often. We may require an update or stop price checking at any time — for example, if Costco changes its site or asks us to stop. You can uninstall it at any time.
Email we send. A confirmation email when you apply for the beta, an invitation email if the operator approves you, sign-in links, setup and status messages, at most one price-drop alert per day, refund notices, legal notices, a warning before we close an inactive account, and a deletion confirmation. Alerts, setup and status messages, and legal notices carry a "Manage email preferences" link, and alerts also support your mail app's one-click Unsubscribe. The confirmation and invitation emails carry a link that stops all further email about your application; the invitation also supports one-click Unsubscribe. Pausing stops alerts, status email and refund notices; legal notices, the inactive-account warning and the deletion confirmation still arrive, because you need them. We send no marketing email.
We may add features. We will describe them here and in the Privacy Policy before they apply to you.
You file the claim
Costco's price adjustment is your request to Costco. Recoop prepares the information and the link. You open Costco's form, sign in to your own Costco account, review the details and submit. We do not submit forms for you, we do not hold your Costco login, and we do not represent you to Costco in any way. Nothing in these terms makes Recoop your agent or attorney-in-fact.
The one action our server takes for you: when you add your Recoop forwarding address in Gmail, Google sends a confirmation email to it, and our server confirms it, so you do not have to copy a code. It does nothing else in your Google account, and you can remove the forwarding address in Gmail at any time.
Beta, as is
Recoop is a beta. It is provided "as is" and "as available". We do not promise that it will find every price drop, that every alert is right, that Costco will grant any adjustment, or that the service will be available or error-free. Refund amounts we quote are a range, because Costco's handling of tax varies. To the extent the law allows, we disclaim implied warranties such as merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose.
That disclaimer does not cancel the specific commitments in these terms and the Privacy Policy: we do not hold your Costco credentials; we do not file for you; we do not sell your data; and we charge no fee unless you have separately agreed to one and a refund has been verified. Those are promises, not marketing.
Fees (not yet in effect — the beta is free)
Today Recoop costs nothing. We charge no fee, we ask for no card, and nothing in this section applies until we tell you it does.
Before any fee ever applies, we will: email you at least 30 days in advance; show the fee terms on a separate screen; and ask for your express, separate consent — a box you tick that is not pre-ticked and is not part of accepting these terms. If you do not consent, you can keep using the free features or stop using Recoop. Here is the fee model we plan, so you can see it now:
- A success fee only — a percentage of a refund that Recoop helped you get. The exact rate will be stated here, and agreed by you, before it ever applies.
- Only on money we saw. A fee exists only after we verify, from Costco's own refund email or another source you connect, that a refund reached you. We never bill on an estimate, a projection or a price drop by itself. If we cannot verify a refund, the fee is zero. Silence always resolves in your favor.
- Only when you used our help. No fee for a refund you obtained without using the service.
- Timing. No charge earlier than 7 business days after the refund is delivered to you.
- Notice first. Before each charge, we email you the refund we saw, the fee and the date, with a one-tap way to say "I did this myself — do not charge me". We honor it, no questions asked.
- Your card. Cards would be handled by a payment processor; we would store only account identifiers, never card numbers. Removing your card stops all future fees.
- Never on watchlist items. Items you asked us to watch but did not buy through a forwarded order can never carry a fee.
- Changes. We will not change the rate or the trigger without emailing you at least 30 days ahead. You can stop before the change takes effect and owe nothing new.
- Disputes. Write to ops@tryrecoop.com. If we billed a refund we did not help with, we refund the fee.
Not affiliated with Costco
- Recoop is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Costco Wholesale Corporation. "Costco" and "Costco.com" are Costco's trademarks; we use the name only to say what our service works with.
- You can do this yourself, for free. Costco offers price adjustments directly, at no charge, through its website and phone line. Recoop is a convenience: it watches so you do not have to. It is not the only way, and it is not the cost-free way.
- Costco decides. Only Costco decides whether to grant an adjustment and for how much. Prices, rules and windows are Costco's and change without notice. An alert is our best reading of public information at one moment; it is not a promise that Costco will pay.
- Costco's terms apply to you. Your use of costco.com is governed by Costco's own terms, which restrict automated tools and the collection of product listings. The extension makes a small number of automated price checks from your browser (see "The service"). You decide whether to install it. If Costco asks us to stop, we will, and the extension stops checking prices within a few hours.
- Nothing here limits your right to deal with Costco directly, at any time, about any purchase.
Acceptable use
You agree to:
- forward only email that was sent to you, from your own mailbox — never other people's mail;
- keep your Gmail filter narrow (the two Costco senders we name). We may pause processing for an address that forwards too much unrelated mail;
- use the service for your own household purchases, not for resale and not as a business tool;
- follow the law and the terms of any site you use with Recoop;
- not probe, overload, reverse-engineer or interfere with the service or its API, and not register devices or send requests outside the official extension;
- not use the service to send spam or forged mail to us or through us.
Our content and yours. The service's software, pages, emails and design are ours or our licensors'; you may use them only as these terms allow. Your purchase data is yours: you give us permission to store and process it to run the service for you, as the Privacy Policy describes, and no more. If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them without owing you anything. Costco's names and marks belong to Costco Wholesale Corporation; Google, Gmail and Chrome are Google LLC's marks.
Termination
- You can stop at any time: sign out, uninstall the extension, delete the Gmail forwarding rule, and request deletion on your preferences page.
- We may suspend or end your access with 14 days' notice by email, for any reason. We may act immediately, and tell you afterward, if you break these terms, create legal or security risk, or if we shut the beta down.
- After the relationship ends, the Privacy Policy still governs your data until it is deleted. The sections that by their nature should survive — "Not affiliated with Costco", "Beta, as is", "Limits on liability" and "Changes to these terms" — survive.
Limits on liability
To the extent the law allows:
- we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost refunds, lost savings, lost data or lost time; and
- our total liability to you, for all claims about the service together, is limited to the greater of $100 or the fees you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.
These limits do not apply to liability that the law does not allow to be limited — including fraud, willful misconduct, gross negligence, and personal injury caused by our negligence. Some states do not allow some of these limits; there, they apply only as far as allowed.
Your responsibility for misuse. If a third party brings a claim against us because you broke these terms or the law — for example, by forwarding someone else's mail to us — you agree to cover the reasonable costs that claim causes us. This does not apply to claims caused by our own breach or misconduct.
Changes to these terms
We will email you at least 14 days before a material change takes effect, and at least 30 days before any fee change. Posting a new version on the website alone is never notice of a material change. If you keep using the service after the effective date, the new terms apply. If you do not agree, stop using the service before that date and request deletion.
Other terms. These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement about the service. If part of these terms is unenforceable, the rest still applies. You may not transfer your account or these terms; we may transfer them to a successor who takes over the service and honors them. Not enforcing a term today does not waive it. We send notices to your account email; you send notices to ops@tryrecoop.com. Headings are for reading, not interpretation.
These beta terms contain no governing-law, venue or arbitration section. One will be added, with fresh notice and assent, when Recoop launches publicly.
